Voice of the Vulnerable

The society is never fair to girls and young women. A lot is expected from them as from their childhood to adulthood. Gender associated roles are planted in girls as they gr ow up. This affects the way they do things and their interactions compared to boys and men.

...

To break out from the chain of being raised as a care giver, requires bravery because you are dismantling the social- cultural prejudices. Normally, women are expected to behave in a certain way and live in a certain way and this binds them into slavery of violence, especially from the opposite gender.

Most women and girls can not speak for themselves and therefore another person has to come out and fill in the gap and amplify the voices of women and girls. It is not just enough to be a mother, cook or caregiver. Women too can be great pilots, engineers and doctors. To become, women have to overcome a lot of obstacles.

Remember, girls are vulnerable. Most of them get pregnant before their due time. When this happen, the society blames them a lot and it is always her fault that she got pregnant before she is married. Nobody blames it in the man who got her pregnant. This time the girls mother has to be shamed along. the mother is questioned about her daughters upbringing. it’s the mothers fault for not preventing the daughter from getting pregnant. it’s assumed that she copied that ‘bad’ behavior from the mother.

The only way out is to always marry her off to any man who is available. most likely it’s a man who rushes in making such decisions. The mother is not allowed to question anything at this point because she failed in the daughters upbringing. No one cares if the girl have a choice to decide who her marriage partner should be. she is forced into starting a family before she is ready.

She is likely to undergo a lot of frustration, mistreatment and violence in that marriage. Her dream is shattered and the best that relatives can give is to force her in staying in an abusive marriage. A conspiracy is made to keep their families good name and reputation, while the young woman is bound to suffer in an abusive marriage or even poverty. THIS COULD CHANGE IF GIRLS ARE WELL MENTORED AND PROTECTED.

It is for such reasons that women should stand up, not just for themselves only but also for other young vulnerable girls. Girls and young women have the right to safety from all forms of violence, protection under the law without fear or unequal treatment. Girls and young women needs freedom from exploitation. Girls and young women have a right to comprehensive sexual education, and access to a free quality education which prepares them for the modern world.

I am generation equality because I believe that young women should be given an opportunity to voice their concerns on matters and policies that have direct impact to their lives. This includes involvement in decision making and pursuit of leadership positions without fear of discrimination, harassment or persecution.

It is our solemn responsibility to ensure that girls and young women are protected from harmful traditions and harmful cultural practices.
